CSMxCMS-What to expect

Words by CLOT Magazine

A new exhibition by students of the Art and Science MA at Central Sain Martins (CSM) is taking place next week. Nineteen artists took a trip to CERN Geneva back in December 2016, going behind the scenes to where few non-scientists go, taking lectures with famous field elites and having close insights into the unique visual culture and community of the site. As a result of the interaction and collaboration with the resident scientists, they have put together an exhibition  “CSM @ CMS – ENTANGLED”, on display at Four Corners Gallery, London, June 14-17, 2017.

Expect to find sculpture, film, printmaking, sound and art installations expressing reflections on the artists discoveries from the trip, including a rare look at the inside of CERN’s CMS detector experiment [1], where particles in cloud chambers may help us understand climate change and the baffling quantity and randomness of data produced to confirm minute particle reactions. There is also the memorable impression of the deeper social context of the institution itself: “In a world that is seeing an unfortunate rise in anti-scientific mentality, we believe the solution is to engage through thought-provoking art and accessible scientific experiments and performances and want to spread the word as far as possible”.

During the exhibition workshops, artist talks and other activities will take place in the gallery space.

Notes: [1] The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is a general-purpose detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It has a broad physics programme ranging from studying the Standard Model (including the Higgs boson) to searching for extra dimensions and particles that could make up dark matter.
