KSENIA KAMIKAZA, the art of sophisticated track selection

Posted by CLOT Magazine in Interviews, Scout & Trends

Riga-born but with a Berliner soul, Ksenia Kamikaza grew up in a family surrounded by classical and pop sounds. Dj, entrepreneur, radio host, founder of Platz für Tanz, owner of FIESTA bar and beloved mom of Maya and Vera, her two beautiful and inspiring daughters, Ksenia is —in her own words— a hard worker and an idea generator.

Platz für Tanz is a music label that blends a wide ranges of music, from deep house to techno. They promote electronic dance music by organizing club parties and releases podcast recorded by the members. FIESTA bar is the place to be seen and to enjoy —in a family atmosphere— the company of poets, artists, musicians and the craziest parties in Riga.

Music evokes feelings, memories and experiences. Music has the power to influence people and bring them together and Ksenia has the art of proper and sophisticated track selection —from jazz, electronic and deep house to techno and IDM— and the ability to move the crowd in a party in a moving train or in a club.

What is more important: to take or no to take yourself too seriously in order to be creative?

That’s the question of balance. You have to be serious on one hand. Creativity is not only about “I see it like that!” Art shouldn’t be only in the name of art, its visual component.

No, there should be a thought, a concept behind it. On the other hand, you should free your mind and take a challenge of the most craziest ideas that are coming to your hand. So, that’s the point of being creative – you should be talented and intelligent, an artist and a manager at the same moment.

What’s your favourite time of the day?

Late evening. The most inspiring time, when things become misty, so you can see something new in it.

Solitude or loneliness, how do you spend your time alone?

I can say  working  but not in the usual way. Actually, creative process never stops. You are always involved in it. So, when you are alone, you have a time to listen to yourself, what you really are, what you really want, and what you really can. This kind of self analysis always generates new ideas and give you strength to finish what you are working on.

Have you found beauty in unexpected places/situations?

Beauty is in your eyes. Everyone has his own standars: we prefer different colors, music, movies, food, places to be. I consider that if you are positive, you will find beauty everywhere. If you are negative, there’s a chance not to find beauty at all.

I’m travelling a lot. It gives inspiration and definitely helps you not to find yourself in stagnation at one fine day. I really love true places, maybe not so clean and fancy, but the one you can see real life: old buildings not being reconstructed for many years. As an example I can name Havana, Cuba.

It’s so different and so fantastic. On the other hand, there’s a true majesty in modern architecture, La Defense in Paris or Dubai. Metal, concrete and glass, but these buildings are so light and refined.

What do you want to achieve before you die?

Oh, the main achievement can be your heritage. If you leave something people will thank you for, that means you leaved your life not for nothing. Now, I’m not thinking a lot about my main goals, I just trying not to let any chance to create and express myself.

One for the road… What are you unafraid of?

Roller-coasters. I really love them. It’s a simple challenge: step inside and beat your fear. It’s more or less safe, but gives you a feeling that you are a superhero. And you become a child for this 2-3 minutes, just as natural as you are. Big fun!
